Envelopes

Pre-made Envelopes
The advantage of using pre-made envelopes is that it is possible to print small quantities relatively inexpensively. The disadvantage is that there are inherent difficulties in printing pre-made envelopes; it is not possible to print closer than 10mm from the edge and printing across different thicknesses is not successful.

The design requirements for successful pre-made envelope printing are:

  • Allow at least 10mm on all sides as a non printing border.
  • Print in areas of constant paper thickness - i.e. do not have a block of print running across a thickness change.

Printed then made Envelopes
This way of producing envelopes has none of the limitations of a pre-made envelope. It is possible to print on every part of the envelope, and even print on the inside if that is required. The disadvantage is that the cost of making envelopes from printed sheets is expensive for smaller runs.

In designing for ‘Printed then made Envelopes’ it is only necessary to consider the finished envelope layout, and how the design envisaged will fit on to it.

With ‘Printed then made Envelopes’ it is also possible to specify entirely non standard sizes and shapes!
